Works For Me Wednesday – Kids and Household Chores

I wrote a post yesterday about how I have been teaching my kids life skills by getting them to help me with household chores. Each week my kids get to choose whether they want to be the kitchen helper, who helps with preparing meals and table setting. Laundry helper, who helps wash, fold and sort the laundry. Dishwasher helper, who helps clear the table after meals and helps pack and unpack the dishwasher or the cleaning helper, who helps with the vacuuming, dusting and general tidying of the house.
This is our second week and the kids are still really enthusiastic about helping me around the house and it gives me the opportunity to spend some one on one time with each of them while they are learning skills that will last them a life time.

As a single mom, I found myself in the caught up in the “I’ll do it myself, it’s faster” trap. I reorganized my life to include time to teach my son the same life skills. He has loved learning how to cook, but only is allowed when I am at home. To keep his interest up, we have started his very own cookbook where we add his favorite recipes. I took a 3-ring notebook, and filled it with clear sheet protectors. As he finds recipes he enjoyed cooking, we type it out, date it and add it to his cookbook. He now shouts out: This one’s going in the book! I have been working on another quick book on cleaning tips, how to repairs, etc. on old fashion common sense ideas that work for him to reference later in life. I wish my parents were still around to ask them, how did you do that?
