Tying Up Some Loose Ends

Frugal Birthday Party

It was Caities birthday party today and even though I’m exhausted it was a good party and Caitie had a great time. Even though the jumping castle was not a frugal option it was a big hit with the kids and kept them entertained for the majority of the time. So much so that we didn’t need to play any games, which was just as well because I don’t know how I could have fitting in organising the kids for a game as well.

The food went down well, I really didn’t go over board with food, all we put out was 1 packet of chips, 1 box of savoury biscuits, homemade popcorn (about 1/2 cup of corn kernals) and fairy bread (8 slices of bread). The majority of that went and then we bought out lunch which was small sausages (cooked in the oven) on small breadrolls. After they had a bit more of a play we brought out the birthday cake (which I ended up buying instead of baking, again not very frugal but I just wasn’t up to baking and decorating a cake this week).

My 8 year old Chloe did face painting, I bought her a cheap little pack of face paints and she made up a sheet of small designs that she could paint quickly. She got the kids to pick a picture and painted it on their cheek. She had hearts, butterflies, dolphins (which looked really cute), swords and skateboards. The kids seemed to like it because they kept coming back for more :)

The one thing that did blow the budget were the party bags. I thought that I was being frugal buying quite cheap packs of lollies and little party favours but when I added it all up, it was more than I wanted to spend and to be quite honest with you they weren’t all that exciting when I made them up.

But again the party was a success, even though I did go a little over budget and Caitie loved it, so that’s all that really matters.

Here’s my first post about the Frugal Birthday Party!

March Challenge

Marchs challenge of only shopping 2 days a week has worked really well for me. Wednesday and Saturday were my designated shopping/spending money days. Most weeks these days worked really well, but occassionally I needed to change the day, but I still stuck to my 2 days per week. So this is something that I’m happy to continue doing.

$20 Challenge

My challenge for April will be to earn an extra $20 per week. Here are my posts on Aprils Challenge.

Earth Hour

At 7.30pm tonight Sydneysiders have been asked to turn off their lights for 60 minutes. So we will be turning our lights off shortly. I love candles and have lots of them, so this is going to be fun for me :) Check out my recent post on Earth Hour!

$20 challenge

Published by admin under Money Making

I’m embarking on a new challenge in April. I am going to try and earn $20 extra per week. This doesn’t sound like alot but with 4 kids and a new baby only a month away, working outside the home isn’t an option, so I am going to need to be a bit creative to find ways to earn the extra cash, but I’m up for the challenge :)

Are you up for the challenge???

I’d love for you to join me. Each Sunday I’ll post about my efforts to earn $20 and I’ll add a Mr Linky to the bottom of the post so that you can link your blog post about your ideas and $20 challenge efforts and acheivements.

When is the challenge going to start?

Tuesday 10th April and the first post will be up on Sunday 15th April for you to link to :)

What am I going to do with my $20???

To start with I am going to use my extra $20 to help pay off our car loan!

What am I going to do to earn an extra $20 a week???

Some ideas I have are:

  • to sell things on eBay. This is going to include selling new DVDs and also used things we have around the house.
  • Post reviews on my blog for Payperpost
  • Enter Competitions

I’d love you to spread the word, feel free to add my banner to your blog or blog about the $20 challenge. Don’t forget to leave me a comment with your blog address so I can come and take a look :)

Christy - Return To Cutter Gap

Based on the acclaimed novel by Catherine Marshall

Part 1 of a 3 Part Series

Based on Catherine Marshall’s beloved novel Christy, this PAX Television adaptation features Lauren Lee Smith as the 19-year-old schoolteacher who flounders and perseveres in an isolated mountain community in the early 1900s. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Great Smokey Mountains, this 89-minute film begins with an elderly Christy returning to the long-abandoned mission where she once taught. Her memories center around a time when change was coming to Cutter Gap–some for the better, some not, and all of it resisted by the locals. The reverend is building a new road, poachers are afoot, and a fetching aviator makes an emergency landing outside of town. Meanwhile, Christy is pushing a young student to study for medical school against the wishes of his father. Mission funds are cut, townsfolk revolt against her, and she suffers the loss of support from her mentor and mission director (Diane Ladd), and Christy must do some soul-searching. Excellent family viewing for ages 6 and up, the film does have some gunplay, a violent injury, and talk of lynching–all revolving around the poaching subplot.

Christy - A Change of Seasons

Part 2 of a 3 Part Series

In A Change of Seasons, Christy returns to Cutter Gap with her adult daughter, Catherine, and narrates an episode in her life as a young schoolteacher. The story picks up where the PAX production, Return to Cutter Gap, left off. In this recollection, typhoid sweeps the region, and Christy’s faith is tested when her best friend succumbs to the disease. Christy (Lauren Lee Smith), Alice (Diane Ladd), Dr. MacNeill (Stewart Finlay-McLennan), and David (James Waterston), the local preacher, do what they can to save the rest of the inflicted, but they can only do so much. Towards the end, Christy gets engaged to one of the men, but then he contracts the disease. Fortunately, he recovers, but things end on an ambiguous note as Christy appears to have lost the friendship of the man whose affections she spurned. This dilemma will be resolved in A New Beginning.

Christy - A New Beginning

Part 3 of a 3 Part Series

Christy (Lauren Lee Smith) and the rest of the Cutter Gap community are just beginning to recover from a typhoid epidemic when a storm hits the rural alcove. In A New Beginning, the second of a two-part PAX production that began with A Change of Seasons, she gets stranded in the forest with Dr. MacNeill (Stewart Finlay-McLennan), and her fiancé David (James Waterston) risks life and limb to rescue her. Despite a loss of property, the town makes it through the storm relatively intact, but many have been changed by the experience. Christy, for instance, has come to see Dr. MacNeill in a new light, thus questioning her engagement to David. Will she marry the preacher or break off the engagement? Marriage is on the minds of several characters in this engaging recollection by the elderly Christy about her experiences as a young schoolteacher in the Smoky Mountains.
