Family Fun on a Budget

Published by admin under Articles, Kids Activities

Cheap activities for families

Being the mother of 5 young children, I have found that family fun can be very costly. A family meal at McDonalds can cost us 40 Australian Dollars. A trip to the movies can cost us $100 if we buy popcorn and drinks for everyone and admission into zoo’s and theme parks cost us a small fortune. So I have become quite good at finding affordable and sometimes even free activities for us to do as a family.

One thing that has become quite clear to me over the years is that children don’t need to be taken on expensive trips to have quality family time. Parents need only spend time with their children, get down on the floor and drive cars around a pretend track, dress up some Barbie Dolls or have a tea party with lots of teddy bear guests. Quality time spent with your children is much more valuable than any costly outing.

Below are some ideas to keep the family entertained while sticking to a budget:

Visit the local library – Public libraries often offer free activities for families, storytelling sessions and kids craft activities.

Go for a swim at the local swimming pools – Pack a picnic lunch and spend the whole day at the pools, provided the weather is nice.

Take a walk to the local park and play in the playground.

There are some activities that you can do at home too:

Dress ups – get out the dress up box and use your imagination.

Make a home movie – get out the video camera and get the kids to put on a play or just make a video of everybody being silly.

Finger painting – Make a batch of finger paint in some nice bright colors and have fun getting all messy. Here’s a recipe for some easy finger paint:
Ingredients - 2 cups white flour, 2 cups cold water, food coloring
Directions - Put water into a large bowl. Slowly add the flour, while the children are stirring. Once it’s all mixed together, divide into smaller bowls and add food coloring.

Beading – Make some bracelets, necklaces, earrings or mobile phone dongles from cheap plastic beads and fishing line.

Bake a cake or some cookies – this is always my kids favorite activity to do with me.

Camp out in the backyard – Set up a tent or make a tent out of some sheets or blankets and pretend that you are camping out.

Build with play dough – Who can resist playing with dough?. Even I can’t resist squishing it through my fingers.
Here is a recipe for Play Dough that you don’t have to cook.
Ingredients - 1 cup salt ,1 cup flour, 1 tablespoon vegetable Oil and food coloring.
Directions - Mix all ingredients together. Add a little water if the mixture is to dry. If your kids are a little older you may want to make some Salt Clay to Bake with them. Stir together: 2 cups plain flour, 1 cup salt, 1 to 1 1/2 cups cold water and 2 tablespoons cooking oil. Knead well until it forms a soft ball.
Use cookie cutters or mold the clay by hand. Your children can create refrigerator magnets, jewelry, ornaments, key chains, necklaces, and much more.
Line a baking tray with aluminum foil, place the clay creations on the tray and bake in a 300 degree F. oven for about one hour or until they are hard.
You can use food coloring to color dough before you bake it, or paint it afterwards. A finishing coat of clear acrylic or even PVA glue will make your salt clay products last longer.

Make a movie theatre at home - There is nothing better on a miserable day than curling up with some cozy pillows, a warm blanket and a big bowl of popcorn and watching a movie. Turn off the lights, shut the blinds and pretend you are at the movies.

Spend the day playing board games – Let the kids take turns choosing their favourite board games to play and get everyone involved.

These are just a few inexpensive ideas that you can try with your family. Remember the main thing is to just relax and have fun, spending time with your children is much more important than taking them on expensive outings.

Alternative Halloween Ideas

Halloween Ideas

I was recently reading a newsletter from Living on a Dime and the author Tawra had some great ideas for people that weren’t comfortable taking their children out trick or treating. Trick or treating isn’t very popular here in Australia, we do have some kids that come visiting at Halloween but not many, and many people don’t hand out anything to the kids, so I have never felt comfortable taking my kids out.

So instead we always have our own celebration at home. We dress up and do Halloween themed crafts and wait for kids to come trick or treating. So when I read Tawra’s ideas I thought they were great and thought that you might want to read them too.

Here they are:

Have the Great Pumpkin visit. After dinner put the kids in the tub. While they are bathing, hide candy all over the house or yard. Then you can leave a trail of leaves around leading to the candies. Light some candles and turn off the lights. After the bath, let them put on their costumes and hunt for the candy.

Try letting the kids trick or treat door to door in each room of your house. Let them put on their costumes and you and your husband or grandparents can hide behind the door and give out the candy. This works much easier with at least 2 adults giving out the candy so that one can give out candy while the next is going to the next room.
Halloween Hunt: Using the same idea as an Easter Egg Hunt, hide little bags of candy corn, or other fun candy around the back yard. Set the kids loose and let them find the candy. Be sure to keep back some of the candy in case someone does poorly. That way you can give them a few more and keep it fun for everyone!

For another fun twist on this idea, hide mini pumpkins instead of candy. Let the kids find and decorate them with craft paint. Let small children attach construction paper cut-outs with glue sticks.

School Holiday Time

Published by admin under Kids Activities

Here in New South Wales Australia our children are about to start two weeks of school holidays. I am both looking forward to and dreading these holidays. I am looking forward to not having to do the nightly school preparation of ironing clothes and preparing lunches. I am also looking forward to staying in my pyjamas until midday if I want to and of course I’m looking forward to spending more time with my kids. But I am dreading the constant noise and hustle and bustle that comes with 5 children in a small house. Not to mention the arguments and the “I’m bored” whining. I have decided that these holidays I am going to plan 1 activity for the kids each day to try and eliminate the disagreements and to keep them from getting bored, so over the next couple of weeks I will try to post some of the activities that I plan.

Some outings that I have planned already are to the local library, the local swimming pools now that the weather is warming up, a card making class at a school in our area, and a few visits to the park.

And some ‘at home’ activities that I have planned are scrapbooking, dressing up, making a home movie, finger painting and beading, baking and setting up the kids little tents in the backyard.

We are kicking off our school holiday fun tomorrow by going to see Bratz at the cinema.

Don’t forget to check back and see what we have been up to.

High School Musical 2 Party

Published by admin under Kids Activities

It is the Australian premiere of High School Musical 2 tonight so my kids and I are having a High School Musical 2 party.

We are going to watch the first movie while we eat hot dogs for dinner and then have popcorn and soft drink during the movie.

I have made the kids a stage pass on a lanyard to wear and I have decorated some clear plastic cups with pictures from HSM. I printed some pictures of the characters I found on the Internet and have stuck them on to the cups with clear contact.
I also have a yellow plastic table cloth to lay on the floor in the lounge room and have bought blue plastic plates and blue serviettes to eat our hot dogs off.

Great Rainy Day Activities to do with Your Kids

Published by admin under Articles, Kids Activities

It’s raining outside and it looks like it has set in for the day. The kids are starting to climb the walls and its only 9am. What do you do?. No you do not hide under your bed hoping that the kids don’t trash the house. You give the kids an activity to do, below are a few suggestions.

CAMP IN NOT OUT – Drape some bed sheets or blankets over your dining table to make a tent. Get your kids to pick a few essentials to take into the tent with them. Pack some snacks and drinks in a lunchbox and your kids can pretend they are out in the bush camping.

BAKING – Most kids love to cook and cakes and cookies are always a hit, but if you want to try something a bit different try these Rice Krispie Bars. Ingredients; 6 cups Rice Krispies, 1 bag of white marshmallows, 3 tablespoons butter or margarine and Non-stick cooking spray. Melt the margarine in a non-stick pan and add the entire bag of marshmallows. Stir over medium heat until the marshmallows have completely melted. Add Rice Krispies and mix together well. Pour mixture into a 9″ x 13″ pan that has been greased or sprayed with no-stick cooking spray. Use a baggie that has been sprayed with no-stick spray to spread and flatten mixture. Cut into squares when cool.

SCULPTING – Who can resist playing with dough?. Even I can’t resist squishing it through my fingers. Here is a recipe for Play Dough that you don’t have to cook. Ingredients;1 cup salt ,1 cup flour, 1 tablespoon vegetable Oil and food coloring. Mix all ingredients together.

CINEMA AT HOME - There is nothing better on a miserable day than curling up with some cozy pillows, a warm blanket and a big bowl of popcorn and watching a movie. Turn off the lights, shut the blinds and pretend you are at the movies.

WRITE LETTERS - Make special stationery and write letters to favorite relatives and friends or teachers.

You won’t hear an “I’m bored!” with these fun activities to keep your kids occupied on those gloomy rainy days.
