Tackle It Tuesday - Tackling the Kitchen

Published by admin under Homemaking, Memes

tackle it tuesday

After all the Christmas and New Years festivities my kitchen was in need of a good clean up. The rarely used bowls and platters are put back safely in the back of the cupboard. The fridge has been purged of all left overs and the containers have been washed and put back in their cupboards. And last years lunchboxes and drink bottles have been purged from their cupboard making way for this years new lunch accessories. I finally have my kitchen back again :)

Winter Wipeout - Week 1

Published by admin under Homemaking

winter clean up
My house is starting to drive me nuts. Everywhere I walk I see something that needs to be cleaned or picked up or dusted. With the kids being home on school holidays for the last week and Rob at home (because he has now finished up with the bank and is looking for a new job) my normal cleaning routine is not getting done and I feel like I’m living in chaos.

So to help get me motivated again I have decided to start the 2008 Winter Wipeout ( yep it’s winter here in Australia). Each week I’m going to pick one room in the house to focus on. Each Monday I will post a list of all the things that I would like to do in that room and hopefully that will motivate me to get it all done.

This week I am going to focus on one of the kids bedrooms - Caitie and Riley’s bedroom in fact.

Here is what I want to do:

Wash the bed clothes
Air the mattresses
Sort the toys
Store some toys in the garage

Store outgrown clothes
Dust on top of the wardrobe
Put the fan in the garage
Wash the walls
Wash the curtains
Wash the windows
Detailed vacuum clean

As I accomplish each job I will come back and cross it off the list.

If you want to join me with the Winter Wipeout leave me a comment below :)

How to Enjoy Cleaning Your House

Published by admin under Homemaking

make housework fun
I used to hate cleaning my house, and some days I still do, but with five children, a cat and a husband that works hard at his full time job if I don’t do it, it just does not get done and quite frankly I like my house to be clean. I like to be able to walk through the lounge room and not have to negotiate my way through toys. I like to walk into my bedroom and see my bed freshly made and my bedside table clutter free. I like to be able to walk into the dining room with out food crumbs crunching under my feet and sticking to my toes and I like to see my kitchen sink without a single dirty dish in it.

I don’t know about you but I have noticed that my mood changes when the house is a mess. I become cranky and irritable and snap at my family members if they even glance my way. It really isn’t fair on the family to be snapping at them just because I let the house get into an ungodly mess so I set out to change the way I cleaned my house and to change my attitude towards cleaning the house.

I began by breaking my chores up in to smaller 15 minute jobs that I could do through out the day. For example I now hang the clothes on the line then play with the kids for a while or do some things on the Internet. I usually set the timer for 30 minutes when I’m playing and when it goes off I get up and go and do another job for 15 minutes, maybe I’ll unpack the dishwasher or make the beds or take the rubbish out to the big outside bin and then I get to play again for another 30 minutes and so on for the rest of the day.

If I am feeling really unmotivated I will set a timer for 15 minutes and do as much as I can in the kitchen or in the bathroom in that time and then I stop and either move on to another room or I go and play. Then I set the timer again later and off I go again. I have found that it is usually just that initial chore that is the hardest to start but once you get started housework tends to be infectious and you move on to another area anyway.

I also try to make the time that I spent doing housework special time for me. I like to hook myself up to my iPod and listen to my favourite podcasts while I am vacuuming or making beds or dusting and I have started to fold clothes in my bedroom using my bed as a table while I watch a movie or a tv show. My kids generally leave me alone to do this so it gives me a chance to have some me time in peace and quiet and get my chores done at the same time.

Housework is never going to be my favourite activity but it is an essential part of life so it helps to make the tasks more enjoyable.

Tips for Doing the Families Laundry

Published by admin under Homemaking

I can quite honestly say that doing laundry is far from being one of my favorite past times. I don’t mind filling the washing machine with dirty clothes but that is where my enjoyment of the laundering system ends.

I am a mother of 5 small children so over time I have learnt a few strategies to help stay on top of the laundry load.

Keep at least three baskets in your laundry room to separate clothes. You can either buy a sectioned laundry sorter or use a few laundry baskets. This helps to sort clothes into darks, colors and whites for washing while still keeping order in your laundry room.

Try to do at least one load each day to keep on top of it. It’s amazing how quickly it piles up if you leave it for a day or two.

Be sure to complete the process, make sure that you wash, dry and fold or hang each load as quickly as possible so that your clothes don’t start to pile up or worse still you may forget about that load you put in the washing machine and they go moldy!

Have a designated space to keep your detergents and other cleaning products in your laundry room. It is much easier to get the laundry done if you have everything on hand to do the job.

Try to work to the same schedule each day; this will help you to not forget each step and to also make it a habit so that you won’t even think about doing it. For example put a load of washing on as soon as you wake up, hang it out after breakfast and bring it in once the kids are home for school.

Hang any clothes straight on hangers ready to go into the wardrobes. They can be hung on coat hangers directly from the washing machine and hung on the line on the hangers. This will help to keep crinkles to a minimum and makes it easier to put the clothes away when they are dry.

And last but not least listen to some fun music or your favorite podcast while you work, this will make the time pass quickly and you’ll have your laundry done in no time.

I Luv The Perfect Housewife

Published by admin under Homemaking

the perfect housewifeHave you seen the Perfect Housewife with Anthea Turner?. In Australia you can watch it on Foxtels Discovery Health channel on Mondays. I really like it mostly because she has some good ideas that help to inspire me to get things sorted in my own home. I also like it because the people featured on the show have houses in a much worse state than mine and in a sad way that kind of makes me feel good!. While some people might think Anthea is a bit anal I love her over the top atittude to homemaking.

I’ve just been over to the Perfect Housewife website and came across Anthea’s top ten tips…… here they are:

Follow them and you too can become a perfect housewife or househusband…

1. You can’t run a home that’s a mess, so first of all you have to de-clutter it. If it’s not beautiful, useful or seriously sentimental, it goes. Charity shop or bin - you decide!

2. There’s no getting away from it: you have to clean. People who say “oh, my house is a bit of a mess, but I’m really clean” are talking rubbish because you can’t have a tidy house if it’s not clean.

3. Make the house into a home. Consider your house from an aesthetic point of view. Rearranging furniture, adding some candles, or making even small tweaks can really make the difference.

4. Run a home like you would a small business and treat it with the same seriousness. If you’re job-juggling, then it’s obviously more difficult than if you’re a full-time housewife/husband. If you are a housewife, take pride in that.

5. Storage is important. Whether it’s cushions you only use outside in the summer, or blankets that only come out in the winter, you’ve always got to think of where to store them. Try vacuum-packing to save space. Wicker baskets are marvellous for putting things in. If everybody knows where everything is kept you can avoid wasting time looking for things.

6. Think about how you run your home. Could it be done more efficiently? In the series, one househusband keeps all his shoe-cleaning things in a lounge drawer but, of course, he cleans his shoes in the kitchen. Be practical.

7. It’s also about team work. When children get to a certain age they can help by putting dirty washing in the right place and making their own beds. The first rule of management is delegation. Don’t try and do everything yourself because you can’t.

8. Don’t use too many household cleaning products which are harmful to the environment. Try cleaning with vinegar, or just use one damp cloth swilled in cold water and one dry cloth. For cleaning windows and mirrors, you can’t beat scrunched-up newspaper, dampened down with some white vinegar and water.

9. Avoid wastage. If you’re cutting up a lemon, put the left-over half into the dishwasher. It adds a little ting and sparkle in your wash.

10. Domestic paperwork (bills, guarantees, insurance) is very important, so don’t avoid it! A proper family diary with everyone’s events and parties in it really helps organise the household.

Tackle It Tuesday - Vegetable Garden

Published by admin under Homemaking, Memes

Last week I posted about wanting to re-establish my vegetable garden and today is the day that I did it.

I started by clearing out the weeds of my little garden. I added some compost (from my compost bin) to the soil and then I planted a few different types of lettuce and some rocket. It feels good to be growing something again even if it is only a little bit of lettuce :)

Why I love Flylady

Published by admin under Homemaking

Listen to FlyLady on internet talk radio

Firstly for anyone who doesn’t know who the Flylady is you should go and take a look at her website.

This morning I did my Weekly Home Blessing Hour while listening to her Home Blessing Hour podcast and I am surprised how much I achieved and how great my house looks and feels right now.

I have never been great at doing the Home Blessing Hour mainly because I try to do to much and it takes me way more than 1 hour and the thought of cleaning for more than an hour just doesn’t appeal to me, so I just wouldn’t start it. But Flylady’s podcast kept me focused and she walked me through what I needed to do and I managed to keep up with her and get everything done.

So if you struggle with getting your housework done check out Flylady’s website, she just may be able to help you :)

Tackle It Tuesday - Kids Winter Clothes

Published by admin under Homemaking, Memes

Today I tackled the kids winter clothes. We store all our out of season clothes in huge plastic boxes in the garage. It is actually ridiculous how many clothes my children have so today I grabbed some garbage bags and sorted out what I wanted to keep and what I would give away. I was quite surprised when I had finished to find that I had filled up 3 big garden type garbage bags. I actually counted 7 pairs of size 8 jeans…….. who needs 7 pairs of jeans I ask you?. Certainly not any of my daughters. So I kept only the stuff that I knew my kids would wear. For the moment I have put all the clothes that I am keeping into a plastic box and my next job will be to sort it into sizes. Last winter I made a spread sheet of the types of clothes and how many of each item my children would need. I mark off what I have for each child and then I know what I need to buy. It saves me a lot of money and limiting the amount of clothes helps to eliminate the clothing clutter in the bedrooms.

Works For Me Wednesday - Kids and Household Chores

Published by admin under Homemaking, Memes

kids and chores

I wrote a post yesterday about how I have been teaching my kids life skills by getting them to help me with household chores. Each week my kids get to choose whether they want to be the kitchen helper, who helps with preparing meals and table setting. Laundry helper, who helps wash, fold and sort the laundry. Dishwasher helper, who helps clear the table after meals and helps pack and unpack the dishwasher or the cleaning helper, who helps with the vacuuming, dusting and general tidying of the house.

This is our second week and the kids are still really enthusiastic about helping me around the house and it gives me the opportunity to spend some one on one time with each of them while they are learning skills that will last them a life time.

Building Your Children’s Skills Through Household Chores

Published by admin under Articles, Homemaking

kids and choresWe all want our children to grow up and leave our homes knowing how to take care of their homes and themselves.

I have found that the best way to help my children learn new skills is by encouraging them to help me with the household chores.

Each week my children get to pick a chore that they would like to help me with. Because I have four children old enough to help me with chores I have made four different titles for my kids to choose from.

We have a:

Kitchen Helper - helps prepare dinner and set the table for meals each night.
Laundry Helper - helps load the washing machine, hang and fold clothes and sort underwear.
Dishwasher Helper - helps pack and unpack the dishwasher and clear the table after meals.
Cleaning Helper - helps vacuum, dust and generally tidy the house.

I don’t expect my kids to do all these jobs on their own. They are all still young so they need guidance with most tasks but as they practise all of these household tasks they will eventually be able to manage most jobs without my supervision.

Having the children helping me one on one also gives us plenty of time to have some special time together and with five children any chance for some one on one time with each of them is very important.

Children as young as two can start to help with chores. They like to help Mummy and Daddy put clothes in the washing machine, pass clothes to hang on the clothesline, they love to help in the kitchen and put a damp cloth in their hands and they become a crazy wiping machine.

If given the opportunity to help while they are young, children will grow up feeling like they are contributing to the household and once they are ready to leave home they will be well equipped to take care of themselves.
