What a Fab Idea!

Have you ever tried to push a pram or stroller and hold an umbrella at the same time?. It is not always the easiest thing to do. I live just a couple of minutes from my kids school and on a rainy morning when every other parent is driving to school and battling for car parks, I find it easier to get my kids equiped with raincoats and umbrellas in the cosy comfort of our garage and walk to school in the rain. It’s much easier than getting wet while you are battling to get the kids in and out of the car.

But the paths around here are not very even and slope to the side in some sections which is really frustrating when you are pushing a pram so sometimes you need to push with 2 hands, so holding an umbrella can be quite tricky at times.

Could you just imagine the other mums faces if I turned up to school sporting one of these???

Five Easy Ways To Spend Time With Your Kids

By Fazil H

1. Call Them From Work

Calling them from work shows them you care. I call my daughter from work everyday. Even though, she does not speak yet, she will know that her dad is thinking about her. We sometime have some many meeting ,we forget to call our children. Set aside at least 10 minutes to call your child. Or just skip a coffee break and call you child. They will give you the energy you need to get through the day.

2. Email Them

We check our at least twice a day , so we have to opportunity to email our kids. Some children spend more time online than watching TV. Send them an email telling them that you love them and that you look forward to chatting about their day when you get home.

3. IM them

This might not be feasible for some of us but if you can IM them do so. Sometimes our children are looking attention in the wrong places. However, they will be very happy to know that mom or dad is checking up on me because they love me. Children like attention even if it is virtual.

4. Read To Them

I read to my daughter everyday. The time I spend with her reminds me how much she depends on me for the simple things in life. I know that there will come a time when she will be very independent and be too busy for us to have reading time. I sincerely advice every parent to read to your kids it will be the best time of their and your life.

5.Turn off the TV

Television time has taken the place of family time. We work all day and come home to greet our favorite programs with affection. Some of us ignore our children when our favorite program is on. Watching it with them is great but our time would have been better spent discussing how their day was. Talk to them and listen to them.

Spend Time With Your Kids.

I heard of a great tip for smaller kids birthday parties when they want to have a sleepover party but are still to young.

Make the sleepover party during the day. The guests can come in their Pjs and bring a sleeping bag and pillow. You can do everything you would normally do at a sleepover except sleep, (that’s the boring part anyway!) eat pizza and popcorn, play games and curl up in your sleeping bags and watch a DVD.

Your Child And His Bath Time

By Andrew Ashworth

“Do kids really need a daily bath?” No.

Especially during the cooler months, children can skip a day or even two or three days, provided that they keep their genital area clean with proper toileting routines. They should also wash their hands a few times a day, before and after using the toilet and before meals and bedtime. Washing their face in the morning and at night will help them feel fresher. In warmer weather, and when kids have been playing outdoors, or have worked up a sweat, a bath before bed is definitely a good idea.

Bathtime fun

Some kids need a little prodding to entice them into the tub. For them especially, here are some ideas to enhance their enjoyment of bath time:

• Get some silly soaps. Soaps shaped like ducks or hearts can encourage scrubbing.
• Paint the town. Or at least the inside of the tub. Nontoxic water paints and specially designed bath paints can bring out the artist in your little bather. Clean up is easy.
• Invest in bath toys. Toys specially designed for the bath-floating islands with pirates or mermaids, water wheels, and other toys that won’t be damaged by submersion-are good bets.
• Make washcloth puppets. Or purchase commercially made ones.
• Offer a messy treat. Popsicles that you might not allow to be eaten in the living room can be a real treat in the bath, especially on a hot summer night.

Bathing products for toddlers and preschoolers

Baby soaps or non-soap cleansers like Cetaphil lotion are ideal for a young child’s sensitive skin. Steer clear of harsh deodorant soaps and those with lots of fragrance, which could irritate your child’s skin. In fact, no matter what kind of soap your child is using, it’s only necessary to soap hands, feet, and the genital area. Soaping the whole body, especially the face, will dry your child’s skin.

Keeping bath toys clean

Soap scum build-up and humidity can cause bath toys to become havens for germs and mildew. After each use, rinse bath toys under the shower spray and store them in an airy container, such as a colander or hanging basket. Every few weeks, wash the toys with an antibacterial detergent or vinegar and water and rinse them thoroughly.

Generally, a parent should encourage a child to take frequent baths. In a number of occasions, some children typically end up not liking their bath times. When it is time to go take a bath, they will start crying, screaming, giving excuses etc. Once you notice this type of behavior in your child, try to find out why they do not like to take a bath. Some children do not like being in the bathroom by themselves. Once you figure out the problem, try to find out a solution that will help your child like their bath time. To some children, it could be that they need their parents to be close by as they take their baths, to others it may be adding some bath toys. This will enable you child to like his bath time and prevent him from having a temper tantrum when he is going to take a bath.

I Luv The Perfect Housewife

the perfect housewifeHave you seen the Perfect Housewife with Anthea Turner?. In Australia you can watch it on Foxtels Discovery Health channel on Mondays. I really like it mostly because she has some good ideas that help to inspire me to get things sorted in my own home. I also like it because the people featured on the show have houses in a much worse state than mine and in a sad way that kind of makes me feel good!. While some people might think Anthea is a bit anal I love her over the top atittude to homemaking.

I’ve just been over to the Perfect Housewife website and came across Anthea’s top ten tips…… here they are:

Follow them and you too can become a perfect housewife or househusband…

1. You can’t run a home that’s a mess, so first of all you have to de-clutter it. If it’s not beautiful, useful or seriously sentimental, it goes. Charity shop or bin – you decide!

2. There’s no getting away from it: you have to clean. People who say “oh, my house is a bit of a mess, but I’m really clean” are talking rubbish because you can’t have a tidy house if it’s not clean.

3. Make the house into a home. Consider your house from an aesthetic point of view. Rearranging furniture, adding some candles, or making even small tweaks can really make the difference.

4. Run a home like you would a small business and treat it with the same seriousness. If you’re job-juggling, then it’s obviously more difficult than if you’re a full-time housewife/husband. If you are a housewife, take pride in that.

5. Storage is important. Whether it’s cushions you only use outside in the summer, or blankets that only come out in the winter, you’ve always got to think of where to store them. Try vacuum-packing to save space. Wicker baskets are marvellous for putting things in. If everybody knows where everything is kept you can avoid wasting time looking for things.

6. Think about how you run your home. Could it be done more efficiently? In the series, one househusband keeps all his shoe-cleaning things in a lounge drawer but, of course, he cleans his shoes in the kitchen. Be practical.

7. It’s also about team work. When children get to a certain age they can help by putting dirty washing in the right place and making their own beds. The first rule of management is delegation. Don’t try and do everything yourself because you can’t.

8. Don’t use too many household cleaning products which are harmful to the environment. Try cleaning with vinegar, or just use one damp cloth swilled in cold water and one dry cloth. For cleaning windows and mirrors, you can’t beat scrunched-up newspaper, dampened down with some white vinegar and water.

9. Avoid wastage. If you’re cutting up a lemon, put the left-over half into the dishwasher. It adds a little ting and sparkle in your wash.

10. Domestic paperwork (bills, guarantees, insurance) is very important, so don’t avoid it! A proper family diary with everyone’s events and parties in it really helps organise the household.

Tackling The Budget – Part Two

Tackling The Budget
The easy part of writing up my budget is done – easy for me because I already had a budget drawn up in a spreadsheet, so all I needed to do was to tweak it a little here and there.

I have decided to just budget from fortnight to fortnight. Rob gets paid fortnightly (at the moment), so I think this is the easiest way for me.

On the day he gets paid I will add any bills that we have received in to the budget as well as any payments due to be paid from the credit card during the following fortnight.

I have upped Robs petrol budget by $50 per week but have left mine alone. I am trying to use my car as little as possible so my petrol costs shouldn’t change to much.

I have allowed $200 for groceries per fortnight. Now this is going to be a stretch for us and I’m going to have to get creative. But now that I have cut Coke Zero from my life that is going to save me around $30 per fortnight (scary hey!).

Ok now for a few ways I have thought to cut down our costs:

- I already shop at Aldi which has been saving us a lot of money
- I already buy bread and milk from Aldi and freeze it
- I already plan our meals however I am going to start including some more budget recipe
- Make cakes and muffins for the kids to take to school for recess instead of premade treats
- Watch power usage
- Watch water usage

I’ll be back again next week with a Budget Review to let you know how I went.

Tackling the Budget – Part One

Tackling The Budget

It seems many of my friends in the blogosphere and I dare say many of my friends in the real world are facing the same problems and have the same things on their minds today!

The rising interest rates, petrol and food costs are taking their toll on many families and these same families are needed to find extra work, cut down their spending or in some cases sell their homes and downsize just to get by.

We are in a slightly different situation at the moment. My partner has just been retrenched from the bank that he has been working for for the past 13 years. He will be getting a decent payout and we are confident that he will find another job so we arn’t worried about that aspect. What I am worried about is that the payout that we will receive will get frittered away and we’ll have nothing to show for it.

We are hoping that we will be able to pay down some debts and use the rest as a deposit on our first home.

I’m scared that once we have the money in our hands (or rather in the bank) we will go into spending mode and not be able to stop. Already I can see that it is beginning, we talked about paying off the credit card with the payout and now our credit card is creeping closer and closer to it’s limit. I even caught myself thinking the other day, that we are paying off the credit card anyway so I’ll just put these craft things on there!. That is such stupid, irrational thinking but I thought it anyway.

So today I am taking a look at the budget and I’m going to make it a priority to stay under budget and to not use the credit card at all.

I’ll be back later with an update and hopefully some good ideas on how we are going to stay on track.

Before I go I will leave you with a few posts from my friends that I intend to reread today:

Lightening has posted Reducing the Grocery Budget Series which has quite a few great posts,
Journeyer has a post about how they are reducing thier costs and
Rhonda at Down to Earth also has a great posts on ways they are reducing their cost of living.
